Every Year, We Brace For Storm Season:

Each year in May we begin bracing for extreme weather her in Tulsa, Broken Arrow, and all over Northeastern Oklahoma.  High winds, and intense hail and rain often take a toll on houses and structures here in Oklahoma.  Over the years we’ve prided ourselves on being able to help folks recover, repair and rebuild after storm damages their roofs.  This article covers how to act when your home has been damaged by a storm.

UNDERSTANDING STORM DAMAGE

High speed winds can tear up and remove shingles, leaving the roof deck, under-layer or even old shingles from a previous roof exposed and increase the probability of a roof leak.

Wind by itself can also lift and curl shingles by breaking the seal and adhesive that bonds them together, leaving your roof vulnerable to  rain and other precipitation.

Hail can dent and slowly deteriorate your shingle integrity or cause pockmarks in shingles, dislodging the protective granules that protect against rain and sun damage.

YOUR STORM DAMAGE CHECKLIST

You may think that you need a new roof. Don’t worry. This article will walk you through everything that you need to know and do — to make your roof repair or replacement happen fast and efficiently.

We’ll cover:

Assessing Your Roof

In order to assess your roof for storm damage, you’ll need to get outside and walk around the perimeter of your house. You should photograph and mentally note any specific points of damage.  A key indicator of roof damage is dented or displaced shingles, torn shingles and bare spots on your roof where shingles are missing.  Noting key locations of a storm damage roof section is crucial for speeding up the repair and roof restoration process.

Check other exterior elements of your home

You’ll want to not only focus on storm damage roof issues.  You will want to inspect all exterior areas of your home.  You will want to take a look at your gutters, any types of roofing accessories, or apparatuses that are attached to your roof, as well as each individual window on your home.  When it comes to windows, we recommend checking for cracks, as well as loose weatherstripping, torn screens, and window shutters.

Inspect The Ground Areas Around Your Home

You’ll want to specifically inspect the grounds around your house or structure to look for clues regarding and storm damage roof artifacts.  This includes fallen tree limbs, broken fencing, even cable lines that may have been attached to your home.  It is always a good idea to check for damage to lawn furniture and other exterior decorations around your home.  We also strongly suggest looking at flat, standing areas around your home like your front porch or back patio for signs of hail or water damage.  You can never be too thorough in this type of situation.

Look For Leaks And Water Spots

Many times when we’re inspecting a storm damage roof, we’ll find key indicators of roof damage in the interior of the home or structure that we’re inspecting.  For the interior of your home, if you suspect a storm damaged your roof, you will want to take a close look at your ceilings first.  We also recommend inspecting your light fixtures for any water that may have collected (This is very common).   You will definitely also want to inspect your attic or other accessible spaces above your ceilings.  Many times you may not notice exterior storm damage on your roof but by taking a close look at the interior of your home and looking for these signs, you can minimize damage to your roof.
